New: The SEC's Approval of Bitcoin ETFs

Eleven spot bitcoin ETFs - including BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), and ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB), among others - began trading in January 2024, kicking off a fierce competition for market share. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are financial products that allow investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin without directly owning the cryptocurrency. ETFs are investment funds traded on stock exchanges, and they can hold various assets such as stocks, bonds, or commodities.

A Bitcoin ETF typically holds Bitcoin as an underlying asset and allows investors to buy and sell shares of the ETF on a stock exchange. This structure provides a more convenient and regulated way for investors to invest in Bitcoin compared to buying and holding the cryptocurrency directly.

Bitcoin ETFs were a topic of interest and discussion within the financial industry because they could potentially open up Bitcoin investment to a broader range of investors, including those who might be hesitant to deal with the complexities of directly owning and storing cryptocurrencies.
